San Francisco at Washington

These were two of the top teams in the NFC last season.  The 49ers will be back with their explosive offense and tough defense, and a big question.  Can they ever get to the Super Bowl.  They have had a solid team for the past five years, but never been able to get over the hurdle and make the Super Bowl.  Last year they came very close losing in the NFC championship game to the rival Rams, but one had to wonder if that was the last shot this team will get.  As they get a year older, maybe moving past their peak at key positions, other teams in the NFC are getting closer to their peak, like the Packers or the Redskins.

Washington really came alive last season.  Joe Theismann finally looked like the starter the Redskins have always imagined he could be and their defense seemed to suddenly mature.  Instead of being a team that relied on Mike Thomas for everything, they were suddenly a team that had dimension.  They should be even better this season.

  1. Maybe nobody noticed, but Jim Plunkett--snubbed in selections for the Hall of Fame Game--has become one of the NFL's best quarterbacks.
