  1. Tenuous Coach Dick Vermeil isn't waiting around for this defense to suddenly improve. He has promoted last year's first-round draft pick, DE2 Bruce Clark, and this year's second, S2 Dennis Smith, into the starting lineup ahead of veterans Mike Smith and Randy Logan.

  2. A couple of game-changing plays from veteran standouts swing this game in favor of the defending NFC East champs ...

Washington's ball on Philadelphia's 41 yard line. Second and less than 4 to go. 6:41 left in the third quarter. The score is Philadelphia 17, Washington 10.
Washington's QB1 #12 Joe Theismann gives to HB1 #39 Mike Thomas. Thomas runs for a gain of almost 41 yards. Touchdown, Washington! That was I22boom1 (181) against Philadelphia's EW1KNIF1 (177).

Philadelphia's ball on their 48 yard line. Second and just over 11 to go. 4:20 left in the third quarter. The score is Philadelphia 17, Washington 17.
The pass from Philadelphia's QB1 #2 John Walton is intercepted by Washington's CB2 #33 Walter Tullis and returned for a gain of just over 40 yards. The pass was intended for TE2 #86 Pete Holohan. Tullis is tackled by WR2 #82 James Lofton. First down, Washington! First and 10 to go. That was P2XdnvrY (235) against WO1gap0 (235).

  3. In his 12th season, Bill Brundige has given way to his apprentice of five seasons, Herb McMath, at Washington's DE1 spot. Similarly, seven-year-pro Brad Dusek has given way to Joe Norman, Washington's third-round draft choice out of Indiana in NFL79, at LB1. The newest face among Redskins starters, however, is WR2 Don Westbrook, an offseason trade acquisition from Baltimore, who has quickly caught on: six receptions, two touchdowns and 127 yards receiving over her first two games in Washington.
