St. Louis 7 at Kansas City 41

What a way for the Chiefs to clinch home field throughout the AFC playoffs.  They are really hitting their peak at the right time of the season.  Their defense played a brilliant game.  They really are the team to beat in the AFC right now.

A great win for the 49ers to clinch the NFC West.  Without Delvin Williams their offense has taken a bit of a hit, but they got a great game out of Jim Plunkett and the defense.  As for the Rams this is a big loss.  Their running game took a big hit early in the game when Lawrence McCutcheon was knocked out for the remainder of the regular season.

Baltimore 13 at Buffalo 9

With 26 seconds left in the game Buffalo sat with a first and goal at the four, with one timeout left, and down by four points. They had effectively passed all the way downfield, but on first down they ran Roland Hooks up the middle for no gain. Another run on second down also got them no yards, then they had to spike the ball with 10 seconds left to allow for a final 4th and goal play. This was an incomplete pass and so Baltimore had held on to win. Not sure why Buffalo decided to run on 2nd and goal with no time outs, but it's a huge win for Baltimore who could not have afforded that loss in their hopes to make the playoffs.

NFL 1981 Week 15 Preview

Dallas pulled out a big win last week beating San Francisco 17-10.  With Washington beating the Cardinals the Cowboys are alone atop the NFC East.  The Cowboys are a much improved team under new head coach Ted Marchibroda.  Meanwhile the Redskins and the Cardinals sit even and would both be wild cards.

In the Central it's Detroit looking good after beating Chicago to stifle their shot at the Division title.  Green Bay is the only team that has a chance to topple the Lions, but all the Lions have to do is win one more and the Division is theirs.  Meanwhile the Packers and the Bears may have lost their chances for the playoffs.  They will need to probably win out and other teams lose out if they hope to sneak in.  Since they play this week one of them is going to be eliminated.

San Francisco has a chance to clinch the NFC West Division this week on the road in Los Angeles.  They have been on the verge of taking this Division for years with no luck.  Can they win now with the pressure on.  For most of the year they were the best team in the NFC, but now everyone is looking to Detroit and Dallas.  The Rams meanwhile need the win as well to stay in the lead position of wild card hopefuls.  Any loss at this point can be critical.

In the AFC the Chiefs now hold control of home field throughout the playoffs.  A surprise to many people, but with their improved defense they have become a very very dangerous team.  Could they be on their way to their 3rd Super Bowl ring.  The Seahawks and the Chargers are both fighting hard for wild card slots.  The Chargers will have a tough road as they still have to play Pittsburgh and then travel to Seattle.  That game should be fantastic, the great defense versus the great offense.

The Steelers meanwhile pulled out a big win beating the Dolphins and with the Oilers losing to New England find themselves now back atop the AFC Central.  They win out they win the Division, but they have a very tough game next week in San Diego.  Meanwhile the Oilers close with two lightweights.

In the AFC East both the Dolphins and the Jets loss and they play this week.  If the Dolphins win this one at home they will take the Division.  This should be a great game.  The Jets live and die by their defense so it's a tough matchup for them.  They will need Vince Evans to have a big game.  Meanwhile the Colts finally won a big game to keep their playoff hopes alive.  They have to travel for their last two.

Games to Watch in Week 15
Green Bay 7-6-1 at Chicago 7-7
One of these two teams will no longer have a shot at the playoffs after this game.  These are two teams that rely heavily on their defenses, this could be a very boring game.

San Francisco 10-4 at Los Angeles 8-6
A win here clinches the Division for San Francisco.  Their offense is struggling a bit without Delvin Williams so they will rely heavily on Jim Plunkett.  There is a good chance the Rams will give themselves a shot at taking the Division in the final week.

Washington 8-6 at Dallas 9-5
The Redskins beat St. Louis last week and now move on to Dallas.  They will need another big game out of Theismann if they hope to win as they are without Mike Thomas.  This should be a high scoring affair.

St. Louis 8-6 at Kansas City 11-3
Talk about high scoring.  This game could be a very high scoring game with both teams averaging over 20 points a game.

Pittsburgh 10-4 at San Diego 8-6
The Steelers impressed last week against the tough Miami defense, this week they will be facing another tough defense.  I don't really think the Chargers can keep up with the Steelers, but to do so their offense will have to show up.

New York Jets 9-5 at Miami 10-4
A win for Miami clinches the Division a loss and it all will come down to the final week.  This should be a low scoring defensive battle.

Cleveland 10 at Denver 13

These two teams have struggled with their new head coaches.  The Browns defense has gotten better as the season has progressed and Dave Mays shows signs of being a good quarterback.  They will need to improve on their running game and get a few more receivers, but they show potential.  The Broncos have moments but all in all they don't seem to be a very good team.  Art Monk looks to be an up and coming wide out, but all in all their offense has struggled to produce consistently and their defense is not very good.  I would say next season look for the Browns to be better, but Denver to be about the same.

Dallas 17 at San Francisco 10

When Dallas let go long time coach Tom Landry at the end of last season, this is exactly the kind of result they envisioned.  For years Dallas has struggled in the second half of the season, and struggled to get over the hump of being a talented but lacking team.  This win doesn't ensure their spot in the Super Bowl or even the playoffs, but it has to make fans and owners alike happy that they made the change.  A great game for the Dallas defense.

At the beginning of this season the Packers were the heavy favorites to take the NFC Central and many had them picked to win the NFC title.  They looked to be that team early on in the season, but then something changed.  They started giving up more points and they started scoring less.  Now no one expects them to even make the playoffs, so this was a shocking result.  They completely dominated this game and looked like that team that everyone thought they would be.  It certainly keeps their playoff hopes alive.

NFL 1981 Week 14 Preview

The 49ers are only one win away from clinching the NFC West title something they have been chasing for the past five seasons with no luck.  They are by far the most consistent team in the NFC and are right now the heavy favorite to win the Conference, but they have some obstacles to overcome.  Their biggest is the loss of their star running back Delvin Williams.  He has always been a major factor in their success and no one is quite sure how they will fair without him in the post season.  The Rams are really struggling to hang on in the playoff race.  They lost a critical game this last week to Chicago another rival for the wild card spots, something the Rams cannot afford to do.  Their defense has completely collapsed here in the second half of the season and need to find their footing if they hope to make it back into the post season.

Detroit won a very convincing game over Minnesota this last week.  It seems to now be down to them and the Bears.  Detroit is by far the best team in the Central and should hold on to take the Division.  With Landry and a healthy Dexter Bussey they may be real trouble in the playoffs.  Not sure what to make of the Bears.  They essentially have no passing game, but their defense and running game have been very solid lately and are obviously getting the job done.  If they can hold on to make the playoffs they will have to get a big improvement from Bob Avellini if they hope to make any dent.

St. Louis still holds the lead in the NFC East with Dallas sitting even.  The Redskins lost this week so they fell back a step.  This is an odd race.  None of these teams are really all that impressive, but there is a chance all three will make the playoffs because the NFC is quite weak this season.  The Redskins are going to have a struggle with Mike Thomas sitting on the bench.  He is the key to their offense and they are really flailing without him.

The Chiefs clinched the AFC West with their win over the Seahawks last week.  Now they'll try and stay healthy and keep winning to get home field advantage.  Meanwhile the Seahawks and the Chargers are fighting for the final wild card spot, and suddenly the Raiders are in range of making a shot at the playoffs, though they will have to probably win out to make it.

Houston took Pittsburgh this last week so they are now tied at the top.  It's going to come down to their Division records.  Pittsburgh right now is 4-1 in the Division with only one game left a trip to Cleveland.  Houston is also 4-1 with a trip left to Cincinnati.  In fact all three of Houston's final games are on the road, while Pittsburgh only has two on the road, but a much tougher schedule to close out the season with Miami and San Diego still left to play.

Miami and New York are left now to battle it out for the AFC East title.  Both teams have tough road games this week and still have to play each other in Miami.  Meanwhile the Colts have completely collapsed and seem destined to not make the playoffs.  Especially since they have to play the Jets and the 49ers still.  In order for them to make it they are going to have to completely turn things around.

Key Games of Week 14
Chicago 7-6 at Detroit 8-5
For the second week in a row the Lions have to fend off a division rival.  The Bears have been very hot and beating some very good teams, so this should be a good game.

Dallas 8-5 at San Francisco 10-3
Dallas has a lot more on the line in this one.  This could turn into a real shootout between Staubach and Plunkett.

Washington 7-6 at St. Louis 8-5
This is a must win game for the Redskins.  Without Mike Thomas it's going to be a big upset.  The Cardinals should win this one easily.

New York Jets 9-4 at Baltimore 7-6
It's now or never for the Colts.  They need Bert Jones to step up his game as well as the defense.  The Jets need to win to keep pace with the Dolphins who have a very tough road game this week themselves.

Miami 10-3 at Pittsburgh 9-4
This should be a very good game.  The key will be how well the Dolphins can do without their star running back Benny Malone who is out for the rest of the regular season.

Kansas City 34 at Seattle 21

With 1:54 left in the game and the score tied at 21-21 Kansas City had a 1st and 10 at their own 35 when Jerry Eckwood broke to the outside for a 65yd touchdown.  With 1:15 left Seattle had a 2nd and 2 on their own 41 when Brian Sipe was picked off by Tom Dinkel who returned it 44yds for a TD and that was the game.  The Seattle defense played a great game, but the offense committed too many turnovers and were just not productive with their 443yds of offense.  The Chiefs clinch the AFC West Division with this win.

A big loss for the Redskins in the middle of their fight to win the NFC East.  The Redskins are not the same team without  Mike Thomas.  He should be back for the playoffs, but it's not certain they'll survive till then.  Oakland on the other hand will be happy with another win.  For a season that didn't show much promise they are trying to get to .500 and play spoiler.

New Orleans 10 at San Francisco 17

A good win for the 49ers at home.  With the Rams losing this week they seem assured to take the NFC West in fact a win next week would clinch the title.  The 49ers continue to have problems at the running back position.  Delvin Williams and Will Harrell are both out for the season on injured reserved and Terry Miller missed most of this game due to injury.  He is probable for next week.  Despite these problems the running game keeps producing when needed, but this has to be a concern for the post season.
