Cincinnati 13 at Tampa Bay 22

A good win for the Bucs who completely dominated this game.  There were quite a few games last season where Tampa would outplay the other team, but lose the game.  So far this season they seem to be able to score points and control the ball, they racked up 169 rushing yards.  The Bengals seem to be going in the opposite direction.

  1. TAMPA, Fla.--Earl Douthitt is the name in the six-point transaction listings on Page 2 of the sports section. He's the celebrated champion's anonymous sparring partner. He's the Harlem Globetrotters' Washington Generals.

Except for two plays this afternoon.

For two plays this afternoon, Earl Douthitt was the fiercest defensive force to be found on any NFL gridiron anywhere. And in this vagabond backup safety's two plays of dominance, the short history of the whole Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise seemed to take a decisive turn.

With the game tied at 13 at the start of the fourth quarter, Dave Green punted the Cincinnati Bengals back to their own 5. The first Cincinnati play was a handoff to Archie Griffin, whom Douthitt so frequently found himself chasing when Griffin was winning Heisman Trophies at Ohio State and Douthitt was toiling for woeful Iowa. Douthitt, a never-starting Buc since the NFL76 expansion draft, leveled Griffin after a two-yard gain. Back dropped Bengals quarterback Ken Anderson on second down, and here came Douthitt on a daring safety blitz.

Down went Anderson for a safety!

    Down went Cincinnati, 22-13!

And up rises Tampa to 2-0!
