Kansas City 16 at Baltimore 22

A good win for the Colts who got their best game of the season out of their defense.  They gave up quite a few yards, but they held the Chiefs to 7 points below their average score per game.  When it counted they made plays and held the Chiefs.  Royce McKinney gets a lot of the credit, he did a great job containing Armand Jackson. They also got a brilliant game out of Bert Jones and Billy Sims.

NFL 1981 Week 7 Preview

There were two key games in the AFC in week 6.  The first pitted the Steelers against the Oilers.  Houston won the Super Bowl in 1979, were the heavy favorites last season losing in the AFC Championship game, and came into this season as the heavy favorites to again win the Central. But the Steelers have surprised everyone this season bouncing back from being the second worst team in the League last year to sitting 4-1 going into this game.  They continued to surprise in week 6 winning a defensive struggle 6-3.  This is a huge win for the Steelers as now people have to assume they are for real.  Pittsburgh fans keep pointing to all of their injuries in 1980 as their downfall and perhaps they are right.  The Steelers jump right into another tough one this week traveling to Green Bay.  If they can pull off a win there then they would not only be the favorites to take the Central, but become a real contender in winning the AFC.  Another surprise in the Central is that Cincinnati has fought their way back to a .500 record.  Their defense is playing a bit better and if they continue this trend they could be a threat for a wild card spot.

The other big game in the AFC was also a division matchup, this one between defending Super Bowl champs Miami and the 5-0 Baltimore Colts.  Miami was hosting this one, but all the pressure was really on Baltimore.  Could they go into Miami and dethrone the defending champs.  The answer was a resounding no.  The Dolphins dominated the 31-7 win with their tenacious defense.  It doesn't get any easier for Baltimore now as they host Kansas City which should be a great offensive shootout.  Miami shut up any of their critics with a superb performance.  Meanwhile the Jets and the Bills are also playing pretty good ball.  At least good enough to have them in the playoff mix at this point of the season.  No one is quite sure how these two will hold up the res of the year, but they have to be watched.

In the AFC West we also had a big divisional matchup between Kansas City and San Diego.  The Chargers are trying to get back to playing the way they did last season making the playoffs, but finding it difficult in 1981.  The Chiefs didn't make it any easier with a solid win over the Chargers.  Everyone has now pretty much written off every other team in the West, but that would be a mistake.  Seattle, San Diego, and Denver all seem to be potential playoff teams.  Oakland's defense is just too bad for them to make the playoffs, but the other teams could all pull it around and get a wild card spot, or even rally to win the Division.

In the NFC Central Detroit won their big matchup game against the 49ers with ease and with Green Bay losing their second in a row have jumped into the Division lead.  They are looking better each week, while the Packers defense and offense are both suddenly struggling a bit.  No other team in the Central is taken that seriously thogh the Bears are hanging in there at 3-3.

In the East the two top teams slid backwards.  The Redskins were upset by Denver and the Cowboys were thumped by the Cardinals.  Washington is still the team to beat in the East, but mostly because no one else in the East looks very good.

San Francisco, New Orleans, and Los Angeles are once again fighting it out for the West Division.  The Rams are beginning to play like the best team in the Division.  Their offense and defense are both getting into a solid groove, and they are beginning to look like the defending NFC champs.  For a team that was written off after week 2, they have very quickly bounced back.  The Saints meanwhile have absolutely no offense.  They have got to make some major improvements if they hope to get back to their 1979 form.  Meanwhile it is still the 49ers Division to lose.  Their defense is slipping a bit, and they need to find their footing if they hope to finally win the West.

Key Games of Week 7
Cincinnati 3-3 at Chicago 3-3
As things sit right now these two teams are on the playoff bubble.  So this could turn out to be an improtant game.

Pittsburgh 5-1 at Green Bay 4-2
Will the Packers lose their third in a row?  Can the Steelers pull off another big win?  This should be a fantastic game.

Los Angeles 3-3 at San Francisco 4-2
The Rams took down the Saints last week and now turn to the stumbling 49ers, a win here would be huge for the Rams.

St. Louis 3-3 at Washington 4-2
The Cardinals destroyed the Cowboys last week and now face off agains the Division leaders.  A win here and the Cardinals would jump to the top of the Division, but don't hold your breath.

Miami 5-1 at Dallas 3-3
This is a tough road game for the Dolphins to have following their big win over the Colts.  The key here will be Roger Staubach.  He has been struggling a bit and will have to have a great game against the tough Miami defense if they hope to win this one.

Kansas City 5-1 at Baltimore 5-1
This game and the Steelers game are the two to watch this week.  Where the Steelers and Packers should slug it out this should be an offensive fans delight.  Look for a lot of points here and either team can win it.

San Diego 14 at Kansas City 26

The Chiefs continue to roll on.  Their offense played a great game against the number one rated defense in the league.  They were helped by a good performance from their defense.  All in all the Chiefs are looking like a real threat this season to win the AFC.

Chicago 17 at Tampa Bay 9

At the beginning of the season many felt, me included, that the Buccaneers would be a real threat to win the NFC.  The big question of course was still their offense, but they played well those first two weeks.  Then the bottom dropped out of their offense and they shipped off long time starting quarterback Steve Spurrier and started Rich Campbell in week 5.  Not much has changed with the Bucs since this move and this loss at home agains a struggling Bears team seems to confirm that the Buccaneers are not on their way up.    A good win for the Bears who are managing to hang in there around .500 despite having such a poor performing offense.

NFL 1981 Week 6 Preview

The Baltimore Colts remain the only undefeated team in the NFL after week 5.  More importantly they are playing better each week.  Their defense continues to show improvement and they look like they will be tough to beat in the AFC East.  Meanwhile the Dolphins are keeping up with them, aslo looking better each week.  The Surprise team in the East has to be the Jets who now sit above .500.  They are playing very tough right now and though no one expects them to win the East they look to make a run for a wild card spot.

In the Central it continues to be the Oilers and the Steelers.  Both teams are playing well and this should be a good Division race.  The Bengals are starting to show some signs of life, they upset the Packers in week 5, but they still have a long ways to go before anyone is too impressed.

In the West the Chiefs look to be running away with things.  The Chargers are the one other team people are watching.  They are getting better each week on offense, seeming to return to their playoff form of last year.

In the NFC West the 49ers were shocked by the Jets in week 5 getting blown out.  No matter though the Saints lost as well getting clobbered by the Colts.  The Saints offense does not seem to be coming around so all eyes in the West right now are on the 49ers.

The Lions have really roared to life and now sit even with the Packers in the NFC Central.  This should be a good battle going down the stretch.  The Lions with Greg Landry at the helm do no know when to say quit, and the Packers are the darlings of the media.  They are young and have a agressive.

In the NFC East the Redskins beat the Cowboys in week 5 to secure their spot atop the Division.  They are fully back on form and playing very well.  If their defense can continue to play better, people will start to turn to them as the star of the NFC because their offense is so dangerous.

Games to Watch
San Francisco 4-1 at Detroit 4-1
These have been two of the best teams over the past 5 seasons.  This should be a great game with a lot of offense.

Baltimore 5-0 at Miami 4-1
The Dolphins are the defending champs and still the odds favorites to take the AFC East.  If the Colts can go to Miami and beat the Dolphins that would be a big statement and elevate the Colts to the top of the AFC favorites.

Houston 4-1 at Pittsburgh 4-1
There is a good chance these two teams head to head games will decide the winner of the AFC Central, so of course this is a must win game for both teams.  Expect a lot of hard hitting in this one.

Philadelphia 21 at Seattle 24

Well the Eagles continue to score a lot of points, but their defense continues to give up a lot of points.  This time they gave up 14 points in the 4th quarter to blow a lead and fall below .500.  A good win for the Seahawks at home.  Their offense seems to be getting more and more comfortable with its new quarterback each week.

Oakland 3 at San Diego 37

The Chargers completely dominated every aspect of this game from start to finish.  This is the first time this season they have looked like a playoff team, and with the AFC West in such a mess if they can keep it together they have a good chance of winning the Division.  Their defense has been solid all season, but this is the first game where their offense delivered.  The Raiders meanwhile looked completely overmatched.  George Rogers continues to impress, but the rest of the team is struggling with age, they still have a ways before they are back at the top.

NFL 1981 Week Five Preview

Baltimore still sits atop the AFC East undefeated.  Their offense continues to play well, but their defense is still a bit questionable.  No matter so far this season they have done what it takes to win.  Miami continues to improve their play and still have the best defense in the Division and maybe the league.  Meanwhile the Jets and Bills both sit at .500.  If the Jets offense can find any consistency on the road, they may make a run at the playoffs, but that feels like a big if.  The Bills meanwhile just need some offense, any offense as their defense is playing very well so far.

In the AFC Central the Oilers find themselves back on top.  It looks like it's going to be a good race this year between them and Pittsburgh.  The Steelers need better defensive play if they hope to win the Central Division.

Kansas City is the loan team in the AFC West that seems destined to be above .500 this season.  Their offense is just as dangerous as ever and their defense is still playing better than they did last season.  That makes them dangerous.  The Raiders meanwhile seem to have found their offensive legs again, but their defense is absolutely dreadful.  Denver, Seattle, and San Diego all look dreadful so far this season.

In the NFC West it is still San Francisco and New Orleans.   The Saints are still struggling to find their offense, but their defense is playing fantastic.  Meanwhile the 49ers have everything clicking and look to be the team to beat in the NFC.  The defending NFC champ Rams are sitting at 1-3 and look to be done.  It's time for rebuilding in Los Angeles.

Green Bay sits atop the NFC Central and with Tampa losing again Detroit has moved up as the main competitor for the Division title.  Suddenly Tampa Bay doesn't look so solid, their offense has gotten a bit shaky.  Perhaps this is why they traded away veteran starting quarterback Steve Spurrier and plan on starting rookie Rich Campbell.  Meanwhile the Lions defense is looking much improved over last season and Greg Landry is still one of the best in the league.  This makes them dangerous.  But the team to watch is Green Bay who look fantastic so far this season.

After the first two weeks of the season I had already written off the Redskins.  They simply didn't look very good, nothing like the dominant team of last season, but in week three they hit their stride and they now look like the team of last season.  If they can keep this up we should have a good race between them, Green Bay, and San Francisco for the NFC title.  Of course the 3-1 Cowboys don't want to be left out, but they still have to prove to everyone that they can hang in for the full season.  Another team that may have found their stride are the Eagles.  They scored a total of 24 points over the first two weeks, and a total of 100 points over the last two weeks.  No one is sure where this offensive explosion came from, but Dick Vermeil is certainly hoping it will stick.

Games to Watch
Detroit 3-1 at Chicago 2-2
The Bears seem to be improving, though their passing game is dreadful.  This is a must win at home for the Bears against a division rival.

Dallas 3-1 at Washington 3-1
It will be good to see how these two teams stack up against each other.

New Orleans 3-1 at Baltimore 4-0
This will be a tough game for the Colts.  The Saints have the number one defense in the league.  A win here for the Colts would make them the sudden East favorites.

Tampa Bay 2-2 at Houston 3-1
A rough way for a rookie quarterback to start his career in the NFL, but Tampa Bay needs to shake things up.  They have built a solid team, they just need a leader.  Houston's defense will be really going after the rookie this should be a fun game.

Los Angeles 20 at New York Jets 26

A rough start to the season for the defending NFC champ Rams.  They fall to 1-3 and neither their offense nor their defense look up to par this year.  Meanwhile this is a good win for the Jets.  Everyone expected a bit of a drop for the Jets losing Joe Namath, so it's good to see them get such a solid game out of Vince Evans.  Over the past few seasons this team has been very tough to knock out, so we'll see how well they do as the year progresses.

New York Giants 3 at San Francisco 27

An easy win for the 49ers who are rolling so far this season.  The Giants meanwhile are struggling after almost making the playoffs last season.  Their passing game is greatly improved but their running game is still mediocre and their defense is not playing well at all.  The Giants and the Browns will hopefully play this year to determine the worst team in the League.

Cleveland 23 at Chicago 24

The Bears came close to making the playoffs last year, fading late in the season.  So far this year they are an astonishing 2-2.  I say astonishing because they have played horribly and yet they have two wins.  Bob Avellini has to be the worst starting quarterback in the league and their defense hasn't even been playing well.  Still they beat the Browns who may be the worst team in the league.
