New York Jets at New England

The Jets stunned everyone last year with their push to the playoffs.  Most everyone had written them off around week 8, but they were fantastic in the second half of the season, especially their defense.  But their inspiration has always come from Joe Namath.  He seemed to year after year dig into his talented arm and pull out wins, but now he's gone and no one is quite sure what this team will be without him.  Vince Evans out of USC will be their new starter and everyone is anxious to see how he does filling Namath's shoes.  They will be depending a lot more on their running game and their defense for sure.

The Patriots will be back with essentially their same team, which is a good thing for Patriots fans.  They are certainly not an old team and should be right back where they left off last season.  For the Patriots it's always the same dilemma, will Steve Grogan be consistent enough to get them to the Super Bowl.  They are expected to make the playoffs, but can they go further than they have in the past.  In his seventh season, Patriot fans are expecting to see Grogan find his groove and take this team to the AFC Championship.

  1. Or will Patriot fans be disappointed to learn that return of a healthy Grogan is the problem, not the solution? New starters in New England are G3 Keith Dorney (who takes over for retired All-Pro tackle Leon Gray), LB3 Larry McGrew (who moves ahead of Sam Hunt on the depth chart after a rookie year that saw him subbing for injured Hunt a lot, anyway) and S2 Fred Cooper (a trade acquisition from the Giants, who moves ahead of Tim Fox).

Coming out of the Jets' training camp, it appeared veteran David Humm had Namath's old QB1 job--but, alas, Coach Lou Holtz decides to go with Evans. Two other new offensive starters: TE1 Willie Scott, the first-round draft choice, and ninth-year T1 Robert Woods, in place of retired Richard Caster and Wayne Mulligan, respectively. The only new face among the starting defense is DT2 Dan Pesnick, a waiver pickup from the Vikings.

  2. Ray Clayborn, the Jets' first-round draft choice in NFL77, leads the NFL's best young secondary.
