  1. What exactly did Dan Reeves get himself into? Weary of waiting for Tom Landry to retire in Dallas, the former Cowboys assistant leaped at the Cleveland opening when Sam Rutigliano was fired the day after last season's 4-12 finish. It was billed as a total-control situation for Reeves, but one has to wonder.

Reeves traded for a veteran quarterback, Seattle's Bobby Sessions, and drafted another in the first round, Neil Lomax of Portland State. And yet the Browns' starting quarterback is Dave Mays, whom Cleveland signed as a free agent out of Texas Southern back in NFL76.

Reeves traded for a former rookie-of-the-year halfback, Tony Reed. And yet his starting halfback is the same ol' grinder, Brian Duncan, whom Cleveland taking handoffs in NFL80.

Reeves drafted Hanford Dixon, a cornerback from Southern Mississippi in Round 2, but the rookie is not among the Browns' two starting corners. They are, instead, Luther Philyaw and Tony Peters, both of whom have been on the Cleveland depth chart since NFL75.

And Reeves went out and picked up speedy special-teams ace Jim Laughlin from the Giants, but the only new starting linebacker among the Browns is Dick Ambrose, Cleveland's 12th-round draft choice out of Virginia in NFL75.

Reeves's only clear contribution to his own starting lineup is FB1 Nate Beasley, an Oakland Raider draftee of NFL76 whom Reeves has converted from halfback.
