  6. It's becoming a cruel joke to Atlanta fans to remind that the Falcons were in the Super Bowl as recently as NFL78.

Coach Marion Campbell's seat was hot BEFORE this 0-4 start to NFL81. If the Falcons appeared to have a plan, there might be fewer calls for Campbell's head.

Consider the NFL81 draft. The first round brought Washington quarterback Tom Flick; the second, East Carolina halfback Tony Collins. Neither remains on Atlanta's roster.

Quarterback has been a problem for the Falcons pretty much since the inception of the franchise. It appeared to be solved with the first-overall selection of Steve Bartkowski in NFL75. The former Cal great appeared to be on his way to stardom when an injury late in NFL78 ended his career.

Kim McQuilken subbed aptly in the Super Bowl run, but he gradually fell out of favor and, in this, his eighth, season, the starting job. So the Falcons drafted Flick--though they had drafted Brigham Young star Marc Wilson in the first round just one season ago. And now guess who is Campbell's QB1? Fourth-year Guy Benjamin.

    Huh?

The story of Tony Collins is less vexing only because there's less history and fewer names involved. Instead of keeping and developing their second-round draft choice, the Falcons instead decided a better bet for their future at the position was Sidney Thornton, a free-agent pickup the Saints drafted in the second round out of Northwest Louisiana way back in NFL77. In his fifth year, "Thunder" is all of ONE year younger than incumbent HB1 Bubba Bean.

    And now Bubba's hurt!

Alas, the only two changes Campbell has made to his starting lineup since last season's 6-9-1 performance are Benjamin in place of McQuilken and Dennis Harrison, a fourth-year pro, in place of Rudy Sims at DE2.
