Tampa Bay got off to such a bad start that it might simply be unable to catch up quickly enough across all of its problem areas before some of those areas that it had upgraded become issues again.
So, for example, while Tampa has put together creditable defensive-line and linebacking crews, the defensive backfield has gone virtually untouched. Nowhere else in NFL82 do you see wide receivers fly so widely open than against the Bucs. No starter in the Tampa secondary--CB1 Curtis Jordan, CB2 Ken Stone, S1 Mark Cotney and S2 Mark Washington--is younger than six years in the league, and only one has plus-70 speed (Jordan, at 73).
Maybe the Bucs will invest some draft picks on the secondary this offseason. Even so, problems are starting to appear in other areas of the defense. DE1 Lee Roy Selmon, the team's first best player, has now grown prone to injury in his seventh season.
