NFL 1982 Week 10 Preview

Cleveland pulled a big upset in NY last week over the Jets and are still in the hunt in the AFC Central.  They have a playoff caliber defense, but their offense leaves little to be desired.  However, there is simply no good team in the Central so they have a real shot at winning the Division.

The Jets lost their fourth game in a row with that loss to Cleveland and find themselves sitting in 4th place now in the AFC East and would not make the playoffs if the season ended right now.  The Dolphins are back on top along with the Patriots who keep winning with their great defense.  The AFC East is loaded with four teams over .500.  The big issues in the East are at quarterback.  Bert Jones and Steve Grogan have really been struggling.  Bob Griese has been sporadic for years now and suddenly Vince Evans is struggling a bit, though he still has a passer rating of 99.1.

In the AFC West it looks to be the Chargers year.  They have the best record in the AFC and are proving themselves to be the best team in the West which is suffering a bit of down year with both Seattle and Kansas City struggling offensively.

In the NFC Central it's anybody's Division except for the Buccaneers.  But sloppy play from everyone has even allowed the aged Vikings to hang around.  The NFC champ is not going to come from the Central, which is struggling just like the AFC Central.

The 49ers looked a bit human in a loss to the Rams last week and find themselves in a bit of race.  Both the Rams and Saints are above .500 and playing well, though the Saints lost a big game to the Falcons last week.  San Francisco should win the West easily, but an injury or two could derail their hopes of repeating.

Philadelphia is pulling away from the rest of the NFC East.  But like the AFC East this Division has four teams above .500.  But the Eagles look like the best team, in the NFC.

Games to Watch
Atlanta 4-5 at Dallas 6-2-1
With a win over the Saints last week the Falcons moved themselves into contention for a playoff spot.  A win here on the road would be huge.

St. Louis 4-5 at New York Giants 5-4
The NFC East is a very tough division.  The Cardinals are a very good offensive team.  This should be a good game.

Philadelphia 8-1 at New Orleans 5-4
The Saints played awful last week in their loss to Atlanta.  Another loss will really hurt their playoff chances so they need to bounce back strong.

Washington 5-4 at Minnesota 4-5   (MNF)
Everyone in the NFC is in the mix.  The Vikings are an old team but they are at home and are playing tough.

Green Bay 5-4 at Detroit 4-5
The Packers had an awful game last week and now need to step it up on the road against a team that has dominated the NFC Central for years.

San Francisco 7-2 at Chicago 4-5
Last week the Bears got their first good game out of Ken Anderson since acquiring him.  They will be ready for this game.

Miami 6-3 at Baltimore 5-4
The Dolphins are trying to dominate the rest of the AFC East.  The Colts will have to get a good game out of Bert Jones if they hope to prevail at home.

New York Jets 5-4 at New England 6-3
The Jets are trying to stop a losing streak and they are trying to do it against a team that has probably the best defense in the NFL.

San Diego 7-2 at Houston 4-4-1
Houston needs this win as the Browns have Denver at home.
