New Orleans at Philadelphia

The Saints rallied last season to make the playoffs, but never found the form that took them to the Super Bowl in 1979.  Still, many people are looking to them to come back and win the NFC West.  They are a fairly young team and a tough team.  They will be relying again heavily on their running game and defense.

Philadelphia on the other hand could never get it together last year to get to the playoffs.  In fact for the last few seasons they've come close but not quite made the jump up to playoff team.  However, they now have one of the top runners in the league in Ricky Bell and with a young core of receivers and a maturing John Walton, fans are hoping this will be their breakout season.   It not it may be Dick Vermeil's last.

  1. The Saints' three new starters in NFL81 are newcomer Keith Krepfle, a waiver pickup from San Francisco, at TE1 and two veterans. Junior Hardin takes over for 10th-year Joe Federspiel among Hank Stram's first-string linebacking unit. Jimmy Childs, the second-round draft choice of NFL78 out of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, takes over for retired Don Herrmann at WR2.

The Eagles have two new starters in the secondary, where an NFL80 starter and three reserves retired. Michael Dunn, who made the team as a rookie free agent two seasons ago, takes over at S1, while Ted Watts, the first-round draft choice out of Texas Tech, is the new CB1. Brad Storm has overtaken Brad Mahalic as Philadelphia's LB3. On offense, speedy James Lofton replaces retired Harold Carmichael at WR2, and Geoff Reece gets the nod on the first-string offensive line in place of retired G2 Wade Key.

  2. Nice coming-out party for Crews, a free-agent signee out of Nevada-Las Vegas who never made an appearance on Stram's active roster as a rookie in NFL80.

Philadelphia's ball on their 49 yard line. Third and less than 1 to go. 5:02 left in the fourth quarter. The score is New Orleans 15, Philadelphia 7.

Philadelphia's QB1 #2 John Walton gives to HB1 #24 Ricky Bell. Bell runs for a short loss. Bell is tackled by New Orleans's DT2 #64 Ron Crews. Fourth and less than 1 to go. That was H22blst0 (273) against FO1bull0 (267).

  3. Might the brilliant game management of Peil Pennington prompt a return to glory for the much-maligned Heisman hero?

  4. Clever schedule-making by the NFL, pitting in Week 1 Dorsett and Ricky Bell, the two heralded running backs of the NFL77 draft. This round goes to Dorsett, as the Saints stifle the NFC's rushing champ of NFL80.
