Kansas City at Denver

The Chiefs seem to surprise everyone year after year with their play.  They managed to stay on top of the AFC West last year despite their awful defense.  If they can show decent improvement on defense this year and keep their offense as dangerous as last, they may be the team to beat in the AFC.  But that's a big if.

The Broncos on the other hand seem to disappoint every season.  But Marv Levy made quite a few changes in the offseason, the biggest in picking up quarterback Danny White.  They will be looking for him to lead this team to a level the Steve Ramsey simply never seemed capable of going.  Denver will also need to see improved play from their defense.  The Broncos will have to come a long way in a very short time if they want to turn things around.  Otherwise Levy will more than likely be out before next year.

  1. Johnny Robinson, a second-round draft choice out of Louisiana Tech, was the surprise of the Chiefs' training camp, becoming one of two new starters on the Kansas City defensive line. Reggie Doss and Gerald Jackson, originally rookie free-agent signees back in NFL77 and NFL78, respectively, have worked their way up to EE2 and CB2, respectively. The offense has only one new starter: FB1 Roosevelt Leaks, acquired from Baltimore.

Denver has only two new starters, but they're both of intrigue. Danny White--out from under Roger Staubach's shadow in Dallas--brings his quarterbacking/punting act to the Broncos, while last year's first-round draft choice, Art Monk, moves up to the first team at WR2. The White-to-Monk connection has already yielded a 45-yard score in its debut outing.
