NFL 1981 Week 13 Preview

All three of the major teams in the AFC East lost this week so things stayed the same.  Miami still sits on top with the Jets right behind and then the Colts.  The Colts are 2-5 over their last seven games.  They really need to turn things around if they hope to stay in the playoff race.

Pittsburgh and Houston both won this week.  Pittsburgh still sits atop the AFC Central and look good right now to win the Division.  They've had some key injuries lately, but keep winning despite them.

In the AFC West it's the Chiefs pulling ahead and now looking to try to get home field throughout the playoffs.  The battle for the final wild card spot right now looks to be between Baltimore, Seattle, and San Diego.  Seattle has lost two of their last three and the Colts are struggling, so that seems to open the door for San Diego who is 3-1 over their last four games.

Dallas, St. Louis, and Washington all sit atop the NFC East.  The Cardinals have the advantage right now having beaten both teams, but this will be a race to the end of the season.  The Eagles loss to Chicago last week seems to have taken them out of the playoff race.  They will have to win out to have a real shot.

In the NFC Central it's anyone's guess who will win the Division.  The Lions look to be the best team, but they only have a 7-5 record.  The Packers have completely collapsed and so unless things change it's hard to imagine they will survive to the playoffs.  The Vikings and the Bears are the two teams showing some life.

Meanwhile the 49ers are pulling ahead of everyone else in the NFC.  It's not a very strong Conference this year, they appear to be the only team with any staying power.  The Rams should hold on to make the playoffs, but their defense is suddenly giving up big points so they have become a question mark.

Key Games of Week 13
Los Angeles 7-5 at Chicago 6-6
If the Bears want to move up into the playoff picture they need to win this game.  This will be a good test for the Rams defense.  The Bears have no offense to speak of so any kind of effort from the Rams should give them the edge.

Minnesota 6-6 at Detroit 7-5
A road win here could put the Vikings into the lead in the Central, something no one would have expected at the start of the season.  The Lions need a win here to put some distance in their Division.

Kansas City 9-3 at Seattle 7-5
This should be another high scoring affair.  The Chiefs defense was the key in the last matchup.

Pittsburgh 9-3 at Houston 8-4
Pittsburgh took the first game, Houston needs this win to pull back even.
