When the Saints went up 10-0 early in the first quarter I thought it looked bad for the 49ers. Twice earlier in the season they had faced the Saints and twice the Saints had easily beaten them. But it was not to be. The 49ers would end up completely dominating the second half of this game and coming away with a very impressive win. Jim Plunkett had a phenomenal day and the 49ers are on their way to the 1982 NFC Conference Championship Game.

Surely, this must be the greatest performance by a quarterback in the playoffs. Right?

It's only the latest fantastic day in Plunkett's career. As his 1975 card recalls, "Jim enjoyed one of best games in pro football with 348-yard passing game vs. Packers in 1973. The 1970 Heisman Trophy winner, he was hero of Stanford's sensational 27-17 Rose Bowl win vs. Ohio State, 1971."
Might Joe Federspiel be ready to call it a career? Says his 1975 card: "An All-Southeastern Conference linebacker selection at Kentucky, Joe was honored as South's best player vs. North in Miami Shrine Game. Also a participant in the Tampa All-American Bowl, he was hailed as a future All-Pro upon joining the Saints. A ferocious hitter." A fourth-round draft choice in 1972, Federspiel never made the Pro Bowl, but he emerged as a dependable performer for the Saints, starting all 14 games and recovering five fumbles, for example, in NFL75.
ReplyDeleteFederspiel has slipped to the Saints' linebacker depth chart in recent seasons, and he is believed to have interest in officiating football when his playing career is through.
