Despite losing James Harris for the second game in a row the Rams held on for the win. They only managed 3 points in the second half and saw their 14 point halftime lead fade away, but they never panicked. Then on the 49ers first possession in overtime Larry Anderson read a little dump pass play perfectly, picking off Jim Plunkett and setting up the game winning touchdown. The Rams are returning to the Super Bowl for their 3rd time in seven seasons. If the 49ers had won this one we would be remembering the brilliant final drive during regulation that sent this game into overtime, but it was not to be for the 49ers.

Monte Clark's decision to demote Delvin Williams will be debated by 49ers fans for seasons to come, but it should be noted that Terry Miller did a fine job in the absence of the NFL76 era's greatest halfback.
ReplyDeleteThis was a hard afternoon for the Ed Newman household. Not only did the Dolphins and their 10th-year G2 lose to the Jets, Ed, wife Cathy and their two daughters got home from the Orange Bowl just in time to tune in the end of the 49ers' heart-breaking loss. The Newmans' cat is "named 'Monte Clark' after his first Dolphin offensive line coach," says his 1983 card.
