Phipps was Cleveland's first-round draft choice out of Purdue in 1970. "After 2 years of mostly watching from the bench, Mike took over Browns' starting quarterback assignment, 9-24-72, and led club to 27-17 victory vs. Eagles," says Phipps's 1975 card.
